Created in 1934 in the form of a circular grass field where aircraft could take off and land directly into the wind, the airfield was used for pilot and aircrew basic, functioning as a satellite base to the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. The Navy assumed ownership shortly after the U.S. entry into World War II. By Presidential order on November 1, 1941, the U.S. Coast Guard was placed under Navy jurisdiction; the U.S. Coast Guard subsequently used it for training.
