Putnam now connected with your institution." Phillips calls him "really a man of talent" and tells May that Putnam needs "just what you can give him a little sympathy - some literary advice - & some occasional tone of encouragement." He also tells May that he "hope[s] much from him [Putnam] & such as he for showing the capacity of the colored race to the doubters about us."</mods:abstract>
