<mods:note type='biographical/historical'>This is a close-up detail of the trunk of the Roby Elm. The Roby Elm was named after Parson Joseph Roby, who planted it in front of his house on Main Street in Saugus Massachusetts in 1770. Parson Roby was a Revolutionary War patriot, a dedicated scholar and minister, and a spiritual leader of the community. The tree was known for its unusually long trunk,which was 30 feet tall. The branches of the tree added at least another 20 feet to the 30 foot trunk. The tree was supposedly a popular gathering place for Roby's fellow patriots. The tree had to be taken down on November 6, 1951 because of Dutch elm disease. (Historic Trees of Massachusetts, 57-58).</mods:note>
