In Chamberlin's article, she discusses the rationale and justification of the current mental health system with a special emphasis places on the coercive nature of treatment and denial of patient rights. She then goes on to discuss the Mental Patients Movement and how they would like to see psychiatrists held responsible. Chamberlin would also like psychiatrist to recognize alternative, patient run centers, as an effective form of treatment. She concludes with the topic of patients should be the ones to decide if they receive treatment, and if they consent to it have the proper information to make an informed decision on which treatment is right for them
