Student work : Parsons students design for the disabled
Description:
The Goodwill Industries of Greater New York acquired a building in Astoria to use as housing for people with physical disabilities. The lower floors of the building are used for workshops and rehabilitation facilities while the upper floors serve as apartments. Goodwill approached Parsons School of Art and Design to design a model apartment, but the students asked to be given case studies to work with instead. Students worked in teams with particular clients with different disabilities. Designs included different colored lights to signal when someone was at the door or reception desk for a deaf client and providing more space for a wheelchair user.
