Some negative results of routinely categorizing and treating madness as a medical problem, and three proposed public health remedies
Description:
Academic paper on the pathologizing of 'madness' as medical malady. Focused specifically on the inefficacy of the medical model within psychatric facilities and the continued suffering faced by persons labeled as mentally ill. Ellingson cites the dangers of forced drugging and shock therapy as well as the tendency for patients who undergo this sort of treatment to be readmitted to the centers at which they were administered. Three recommendations are given as possible solutions; alternative treatments for persons in crisis, increased funding for public education programs and the separation of "symptoms" from diagnoses.
