Interview with Mary Kemp, whose family has lived on Mission Hill for over 100 years, conducted by Sari Roboff. Kemp appreciates the diversity of people currently living in Mission Hill and believes that diversity has a positive influence on her children. Kemp talks about attending Mission Grammar School and Mission High School and school-oriented social activities. While the high school was coeducational, Kemp emphasizes that the genders were taught separately. Kemp also talks about novenas at Mission Church (Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help) and believes that the demolition of triple deckers to build high rise buildings next to Mission Church pushed out many parishioners from the area. Other topics include the Calumet Tavern, the Hitching Post, Brigham Circle, Conway’s Market, rag peddlers, a miracle that occurred at Mission Church’s Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and anecdotes about the neighbors she had growing up in Mission Hill.
