Dallin was born in 1861 in Springville, Utah, but moved to the Boston area for his artistic training at age 19. He Married Vittoria Colonna Murray in 1891 and moved to Arlington in 1900. It was here they lived the rest of their lives and raised the three sons shown in this sculpture. He taught at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (Massachusetts College of Art and Design). He was also an Olympic archer. He is best known for his sculptures of Native Americans, including Appeal to the Great Spirit outside the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He is also known locally for the statue of Paul Revere at the Revere Mall in the North End and nationally for his sculpture of the Angel Moroni on top of the Latter Day Saint Temple in Salt Lake City Utah. The latter was recently damaged when a 5.7 magnitude earthquake caused the loss of his trumpet and a portion of his arm.
