'Posse NFX was formed directly from the Guru-less Gangstarr posse in 1990 or 1991. They usually performed with a live band (drums, guitar, DJ) and were important because they performed at rock clubs during a very sad era in Boston's club scene. Most clubs, purely out of racist motives and ignorance, would not book hip-hop groups from the 80s until the late 90s. But Posse NFX sold themselves as a funk band so they could get in the door. And they were a great live band. The Rat was known much more as a rock/punk club, but they did book hip-hop occasionally during that era. Towards the mid 90s they even held 'open mic'/cypher hip-hop nights ad the club organized by Dave Mecca and others.
