'Following my graduation from the University of Colorado at Boulder, I was about 23 or 24, and I was drafted into the Korean War. I was working at Dun and Bradstreet, the credit rating agency. I became a member of the U.S. Army, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division. I underwent basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was transferred to California where I boarded a troop ship headed for Japan en route to Korea. I entered the U.S. Army as a recruit, completed my service years as a Master Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. While in the seervice I was asked to assist the commanding officer by writing letters to the families of those mortally wounded or missing in action, which I felt honored to do. My company tried to look after children in a nearby Korean orphanage, writing to families and churches in the USA for clothing and other very basic items to share. I was taken by this little girl. I grew up in Canon City, Colorado. Pictured: Harvey Everett, Jr. and an orphan named Sussi.'
