Nomans land boat, Mabel, built for Vineyard Voyagers
Description:
'This boat was designed and built by my friend Myles Thurrlow when he was 19 for Vineyard Voyagers, a non-profit with the mission of giving Islanders 'significant encounters with the sea.' 'Mabel' is a 28 foot, double-ended spirit-rigged ketch, with a dipping lug mizzen. She is reminiscent of a Noman's Land boat, a type of dory that was used to fish off the Vineyard in the 1900s. She is powered by 2 canvas sails and/or 2 to 6 long oars. In this picture, she is moored at the Coastwise Packet Company dock, next to the Black Dog Tavern. She is sporting a set of new sails which I helped to sew at the sail loft just down the beach above Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway. She was the brain child of my father, Sidney Morris, and it was he who commissioned Myles to design and build her. He also sailed with her and seven teenagers on her maiden voyage to the Hudson River. The captain of that trip was Malcom Boyd who orginally started Vineyard Voyagers to take island high school student on outdoor adventures. Location: Vineyard Haven Harbor.'
