<mods:abstract>'I have brought photos of three of the several schools built in Hingham built in the 1880s, West School (1894), Center School (1894), and South School (1848). All three were wooden buildings with a similar design of two stories housing six classrooms, coat rooms, and a couple of offices, with basement space used for cafeteria functions and lavatories. These photos are meaningful to me because all three were in use when I attended elementary school in Hingham in the 1940s. They all ceased to exist before or just after the time I began my teaching career in Hingham in 1963. I went to West School on Thaxter Street for grades 1-3. There was no kindergarten at the time. These three schools housed all grades 1-3 Hingham students in the mid 1940s; then all grades 4-6 students transitioned to North School on Lincoln Street (a building that was at the time a part of the Shipyard complex). Center School was razed (date?), and the land at the intersection of Spring and School Streets is now used as a play field. After West School was razed, the property became the site of the Thaxter Park Housing complex (1974+). A private home now occupies the original South School site, and a new (brick building) South School (1948) was constructed further South on Main Street next to the Constitution Fire Station. Location: Hingham Center.'</mods:abstract>
