This is a flyer for Work Week 1969, an annual event at Springfield College. The flyer has a picture of Art Linkletter and of the school’s swimming pool. It reads, “Art Linkletter and Springfield College are working for a new swimming pool on campus – You can help, too! The Work Week Committee awaits your telephone request – call 781-2216 – for a work group to come to your home the week of April 3-10, call the above number, any day (including Sundays) 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. – one person or ten – your spring cleaning job will be done – and well! (no fees – contributions only).”

Work Week was a precursor to Humanics-in-Action Day, which takes place every fall at Springfield College and reflects the school’s long tradition of community service. The 1969 Work Week was particularly ambitious and productive. As one of the kickoff events of a capital campaign led by Art Linkletter, the famous television personality, students hired themselves out to local businesses and individuals. Over one thousand students contributed more than three thousand hours of labor to the effort, and the contributed $34, 570.81, to the capital campaign. The funds raised helped build the new library, athletic fields, and science center. In the course of their labors, the students also consumed more than six hundred gallons of gasoline, six hundred gallons of coffee, and 1,600 doughnuts (all donated by local businesses and Springfield College staff).
