This is a receipt for the sale of a slave boy from Malachy Salter, Jr. to Captain James Dalton, 14 November 1749. Dalton, who died in 1783, was a well-to-do shipmaster who settled in Boston and engaged in shipping, real estate, and mercantile pursuits. The present-day Congress Street in Boston was previously known as Dalton Street, where his residence was located. From the Dalton family papers
