Herrington was a Springfield College graduate student in 1973, and as a graduate assistant he was designated to teach the women's skills and techniques course in track and field. At this time, there was no women's track team at Springfield College. However, the number of women that competed individually unattached at various national AAU track meets was growing. With the encouragement of Vern Cox, the men's Varisty Coach, Herrington sought to start a team, and the first practice was held on November 29, 1973. Besides scheduling competition and managing finances and fundraising, the team had a successful season and was the start to the women's varsity team coming in 1977.
