Final cut of an interview with cardiologist and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) co-founder Bernard Lown held by Emily R. Novak Gustainis and Heather Cristiano at Lown's house in Newton, Massachusetts. Interview was conducted for a presentation at the Wellcome Library, London, England on 27 June 2014 as part of the symposium Beds not bombs: Exploring the archives of anti-nuclear medical campaigning and protest ("Against the Unimaginable and Unpredictable: Contextualizing the Records of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War"). The symposium was held to celebrate the opening of the Medact archive. In the interview, Lown discusses: founding Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR); why he felt physicians were the right people to address the issue of nuclear war when he founded IPPNW; the role uncertainty about the nature and outcome of nuclear war factored in to his motivation to act against the threat that atomic warfare posed to human society; the role of MAPW (Medical Association for Prevention of War) and MCANW (Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons) members within IPPNW; and the future of his own work as a physician activist.
