Item Information
- Title:
- Interview with poet Nikki Giovanni
- Description:
-
In this clip Poet Nikki Giovanni discusses her early career and the responsibility of artists to make their work known. Overall the program focuses on poetry not only as an art form, but as a vehicle for engendering social change and new attitudes towards the arts. Composed of a number of segments, Poetry and Arts includes a reading of a Paul Lawrence Dunbar poem by Elma Lewis (Director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists) to a group of young children, an excerpt from an interview with poet Nikki Giovanni, a tutorial on getting published, an editorial on the "state of the arts" by House Representative Louis Stokes (Ohio), and a listing of new volumes of poetry of interest to the African American community. Produced by Marita Rivero. Directed by Conrad White.
