The Tremont Street subway was the first underground transit system built in the United States, and ran from the Public Garden to the North End in Boston. This photograph was taken on September 1, 1897, the day the subway opened to the public. Open summer cars are pictured at the Public Garden entrance. The last open cars used in Boston's subways were retired in October 1919.
