Carlisle Foyer in Alumni Hall
Item Information
- Title:
- Carlisle Foyer in Alumni Hall
- Description:
-
A lantern slide of the Carlisle Foyer, located inside Springfield College's (then the International YMCA College) all-male dormitory, Alumni Hall. The lantern slide shows the east or back side of the foyer which has a view of the Lake Massasoit. The lantern slide is part of a set used as requiting tool. The McKenzie Bronzes are not shown in the slide. The Carlisle Foyer, donated by Mr. S. Richard Carlisle of Springfield, holds gatherings, presentations and student events for all students to enjoy. During the 1930s, Springfield College used this image in a recruitment pamphlet with two titles: “A Cinema of Springfield College” and “Being the story of a Young Man who elects to go to Springfield College.” Through a series of pictures featuring the campus, students, and faculty, this pamphlet describes the life of a Springfield College student, from his very first day to graduation.

On September 22, 1926 the cornerstone of the International YMCA College's (now Springfield College) new men’s dormitory, Alumni Hall, was laid. Just one year after the cornerstone was laid, Alumni Hall was completed. The building, though, was not formally dedicated until June 15, 1930 when all the funds for the building were officially received. In October of 1944, Alumni Hall, in conjunction with the Administration building, was used as a U.S. Navy Convalescent Hospital. The majority of the patients were housed in Alumni Hall, with one wing equipped for bed cases and the rest converted into hospital rooms for 2-4 men. Today, with the exception of necessary renovations, Alumni Hall remains largely unchanged.
