  <mods:abstract>John Eliot Bowen was the son of Henry Chandler Bowen and Lucy Maria Tappan Bowen. In 1886 Bowen received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was employed as managing editor of "The Independent," the religion and anti-slavery journal founded by his father. He died of typhoid fever in 1890, two days before he was to be married.</mods:abstract>
