This is a picture of the Varnum Continentals from East Greenwich RI in the April 19th parade in Lexington Mass. The year is probably 1911 as the Varnums have other photographs from that same year's parade and there are similarities. The location is Mass Ave in East Lexington in front of the Robbins family cemetery, approximately 445 Mass Ave. It is about 10:30 AM. The day is and overcast and windy. The town has not watered the streets and it is dusty. The Lexington Minute Men are off to our left at the head of the parade. Then we have the fife and drums of the Varnums. Behind them we have a guest in top hat accompanied by what we think are the Ancient & Honorable Artillery and National Lancers as Honor Guard. The guest may be Gov. Pothier of RI as he was invited to attend. Gov. Foss of Ma was also invited but was not sure of his schedule and hoped to join later in the day. Behind them we have the main body of the Varnum Continentals. We believe that this photo is by William J. Doane of Arlington Ma or by William Hynes, Doane's step son-in-law and employee. It came with a large group of photographs attributable to Doane and the Doane Studios of Arlington, all from about that same period.
