This hand-colored lantern slide shows an illustration of an American flag with forty-five stars. This image was likely created after January 4, 1896, when Utah entered the Union, and before November 16, 1907, when Oklahoma entered the Union. The flag consists of seven horizontal red stripes alternating with six horizontal white stripes. These thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen British colonies that declared independence from England. A blue rectangle in the canton bears fifty small, white, five-pointed stars that represent each state. The United States adopted the original version with thirteen stars on June 14, 1777, and the current version with fifty stars on July 4, 1960.
