Can We Do It? (November 1916)
Item Information
- Title:
- Can We Do It? (November 1916)
- Description:
-
This lantern slide shows a sign on the campus of the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. This sign measures the students’ progress at unloading 2000 loads of sand in three days. In the center is a clock hand that can be rotated to track their progress, and it reads at just under 625 loads. The center of the sign says, “Can We Do It? Watch Us.” Leaning against the signpost is a shovel. This slide was taken sometime during November 1916, when Springfield College students were given three days off from classes to participate in Work Days. During this time, the students used sand to grade land as part of a construction project adjacent to Pratt Field. Grading refers to the engineering and construction work necessary to ensure a level base (or one with a specified slope). Teams were hired to deliver sand, and the students worked in units of twelve. Springfield College gave free cider and doughnuts to the students. According to old catalogue notes, Mr. Bunker organized this project, which was one of several campus grading projects completed by students.
