<mods:abstract>This video shows the dedication of the Schoo-Bemis Science Center and Hickory Hall at Springfield College (Springfield, MA). The dedication was held outside on Thursday, September 27, 2007. The video begins with David J. Fraboni II, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, welcoming the audience. Richard B. Flynn, President, and Jean Wyld, Vice President for Academic Affairs, gave the opening remarks.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>In 2006, Springfield College undertook the complete renovation of Schoo Hall, a well-used building erected in 1963. This renovation, the design for which closely followed the guidelines for the National Science Foundation’s Project Kaleidoscope, resulted in the new Schoo-Bemis Science Center. Inspired by the students’ pursuit of the sciences, this was the first of the projects to be supported by “Leadership for the 21st Century: The Campaign for Springfield College.” The renovation was completed in early 2007 and consolidated all sciences (biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics) under one roof. Included in the new facilities are laboratories for advanced and introductory science courses, instrumentation rooms, research space for student and faculty projects, a hazardous chemicals waste area and equipment stockroom, preparation areas, computer classrooms, faculty and departmental offices, and an atrium lounge. Hickory Hall, formerly Bemis Hall, was built in the early 1970s as a facility that “stands as a symbol of life and man’s continuing study and research into the science of life.” An extensive renovation was completed in early fall 2007. The 17,000 square foot building contains seven classrooms, each with capacity for 30-50 students, one tiered classroom seating 80 students, and offers state-of-the-art instructional technology. It also houses the Academic Success Center and the offices of the dean and of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies.</mods:note>
