Memorial march for Martin Luther King., Jr., led by Linus Pauling : Pauling at the front of a ground of marchers, Memorial Hall in background
Description:
Chemist and two-time Nobel Prize laureate Linus Pauling arrived on campus days after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., to give four lectures on "Scientific Discovery: Its Impact Upon Man," inaugurating the lecture series named for King. On April 9, the day of King's funeral in Atlanta, Pauling participated in a memorial march of the UMass community, from the campus to the Amherst Common. The march was followed by a silent vigil on the common and a service held outside the Student Union, at which Pauling spoke.
