<mods:abstract>A tribute to the Cross Country, Track and Field teams of Springfield College. This tribute was published as part of the Fall Homecoming newspaper, dated November 15-16, 1974. The tribute starts with the birth of Track and Field, and Cross Country to the College, a description of Vernon Cox, other famous coaches, and alumni Dr. Thomas Waddell, (class of 1959, Olympian). The document finishes with a listing of records and record holders of the time.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Vernon W. Cox (class of 1944), was one of the College’s all around undergraduate athletes, afterwards he came to be the President of the College Coaches Cross Country Association and he was on the most successful coaches on the total College staff in the 1970’ s. Cox coached the team from 1955 until 1976 . Throughout the years, there have been six different coaches for the men’s track and field team at Springfield College. The first coach was Louis Schroeder, followed by Paul Otto, Jack Rothacher, Les Judd, and Vern Cox. In 1963, the team placed 5th place in the NCAA national championships. One standout for the team was Mike Brown, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 1980 he was an Outdoor All-American, along with W.F. Newhall. In 1984 he went on to be a finalist in the United States Olympic Decathlon Trials. The current head coach, Ken Klatka, an associate professor of physical education at Springfield College, will enter his 38th season as head coach, and 44th as a coach overall in 2013-2014. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 447 wins, 156 losses, and two ties for an impressive .743 winning percentage. In 2011, Klatka was inducted into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame. Klatka’s teams are among the best in the region.</mods:note>
