. The International Lyceum was formed in 1902 because of limited membership in other societies. The name International suggests the cosmopolitan character of its membership. Dr. F. N. Seerley performed as main critic of the society. After winning the inter-society debates of 1915, the International Lyceum had to surrender the silver cup in 1916 to the Philomathean Society, which obtained medals for the individual men, as well as a leg of the famous silver cup. In 1917, because of World War I, many members of the International Lyceum answered the call to serve in the US military or in the Association service in the allied army. No freshmen were permitted admission in any literary society from 1917 on either, until they took special courses in public speaking. “Due to these reasons the numbers of the society were small, nevertheless the usual ‘pep’ and enthusiasm, for which she is famous, have prevailed”. (The Massasoit, 1917). The 1917 inter-society debates was won by the Philomathean team, on the subject: “Resolved, that the United States should send troops overseas.”.
