This photograph shows the Philomethean Literary Society of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, in 1910. The photograph shows a group of 19 men in three rows. It is believed the photograph was taken in a professional setting, probably in a studio. The Philomethean Literary Society was organized in 1909 by Professors Affleck and Cheney, who acted as critics. Both sit on the photograph, bottom left. The society won it first Inter-society debate that same year, earning a trophy . presented by the student Association. “This year we hace succeeded in getting into the final debate. This years has also brought in a number of new members and an increased interest had been shown in our varied programs. Being young we have a very short history but it will not be long before it will take a very large book to contain the story of the society that has proven itself to be the best yet”. The Massasoit, 1910
