<mods:abstract>The Amherst Student is the college newspaper published by the students of Amherst College. The Student began publication on February 1, 1868 and is currently being published. From June 1943-August 1946, the Student suspended publication. During this time, two other newspapers were published to take the place of the Student; The Gazette of Amherst College (v.1) was published weekly by Amherst College from June 25, 1943-June 23, 1944; and, the Jeff (v.1-v.5) was published weekly by the students of Amherst College from June 30, 1944-May 28 1948. From 1877-1896 during summer school sessions, the Student was published weekly as: the Amherst Summer Student; and later as: the Summer School Student. During the Student’s publication history, numerous supplements and special issues have been published. Many supplements and special issues are called: Extra; and others have distinctive titles. Two supplements with distinctive titles published two or more times and which frequently carry the volume numbering of the Amherst Student are: the Amherst Student Review; and: View. Many issues also have incorrect volume, number and date errors or lack some of these elements.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Volume number is incorrectly printed as 96. Bound with this issue of the Amherst Student is volume 2, number 2 of The Valley Review. The Valley Review: A Four College Review of Books contains book reviews written by students from the five colleges and began publication circa March 16, 1967 and appears to have ceased publication with an issue called: Vol. 2, no. 3 (May 16, 1968). Excluding the first published issue which contains no numeric or chronological designation, all other issues carry dates that correspond to published issues of the Amherst Student. This literary magazine was initially issued as a supplement to the Amherst Student, Mt. Holyoke News, Smith Sophian, and The University of Massachusetts Collegian (Daily Collegian). With volume 2 the subtitle changed to “A Five College Review of Books” even though there does not appear to be involvement from Hampshire College students. With the issue called Vol. 2 no.2 (Mar. 14, 1968), this title ceased being issued a supplement to Mt Holyoke News. With the issue called Vol. 2, no.3 (May 16, 1968), this title ceased being issued as a supplement to the University of Massachusetts Daily Collegian. The editorial office for the first 4 issues was located at Amherst College and the editorial office for the last published issue was located at Smith College. Volume 1 is complete in 2 issues and v.2 is complete in 3 issues. The last published issue also contains the Amherst Student logo at the bottom of the cover page.</mods:note>
