Herman congratulates his father on turning 71 or 72 and is proud to have him as a father. The war is a terrible thing but he thinks it will end with the "right" side victorious. He appreciates everything John's done for him and wishes he had been able to confide more in him in the past. He is sending money home and hopes that John will use some of it. He writes about his experience in France, including a haircut he had and how few horses there are compared to the United States.
