This photograph consists of a collage of photographs which was distributed as a fundraising raising effort to rebuild the destroyed Y.M.C.A. building in Johnstown, Pa. after the devastating flood of May 31,1889. A typed legend identifying the pictures shown was once attached to the bottom of the front of the picture. It read: "YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION, JOHNSTOWN, PA. 1. Two weeks before flood. Building 46x65 feet, entire second and third floors occupied by Association. 2. The Judge Flannagan residence, in which headquarters were opened ten days after flood. 3. Temporary building, 30x42 feet. 4. Ruins--site of building No. 1, after flood. 5. Relics--all that was recovered, showing keys of building carried by Secretary Harter. 6. John G. Alexander, President, perished May 31, '89. 7. Mrs. J. G. Alexander, President Ladies' Auxiliary, perished May 31, '89. 8. Miss Rose Young, President Ladies' Auxiliary. 9. John Thomas, President. 10. President Thomas' Home. 11. S.L. Harter, General Secretary. 12. Morrell Institute--home of Secretary Harter before flood. 13. Reading Room. 14. Parlor. 15. Office and Library."

On the verso of this picture a printed caption reads: "NOTICE. This picture is arranged to gratify many friends of the Association whose wishes deserve respect. It records a portion of an 'awful history' more effectually than words could express. The entire proceeds from the sale will be devoted to the 'Permanent Building Fund' opened by the Worker's Bible Training Class Dec. 6, 1889. A copy of this picture will be mailed to any address on receipt of one dollar. Address, Worker's Bible Training Class, Young Men's Christian Association, Johnstown, Pa." Another penciled caption reads “www.rps.gov/jofe/home.htm”.
