On the left is the old Soviet post office on Rustaveli Avenue. This was the scene of the March 9, 1956 massacre (about 20 killed) of Georgian demonstrators by Soviet troops. The demonstrators were calling for a celebration of Stalin's birthday which Khrushchev, as part of his de-Stalinization campaign, had postponed.
