This lantern slide, "Aldwych Theatre Y.M.C.A. (1918)," shows the exterior of the Aldwych Theatre in London, England. During August 1917, the Y.M.C.A. signed a contract to rent the Aldwych Theatre for one year. The new building allowed the Y.M.C.A. to house 1,300 soldiers, and the facilities were operated by L. Jenner and G. J. Wells. Formerly a Western district pastoralist and the honorary manager of the Y.M.C.A. Soldiers’ Rest Home at St. Kilda, Jenner moved to France to assist the Australian Y.M.C.A. Wells was a dentist, but spent World War I serving as secretary of the Australian Y.M.C.A. in London. The Aldwych Theatre opened on December 23, 1905, and today continues to host a mixture of plays, comedies, and musical theatre productions. This item is part of Springfield College’s series of lantern slides depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.
