<mods:abstract>Printed on May 27, 1951 by the Springfield Sunday Republican, this section celebrates the five National Volleyball Championship Tournaments hosted by Springfield College: the National Open, Y.M.C.A., Women's, Veterans' and National collegiate champions. Containing mostly photographs of different volleyball games, the article has a brief section covering the history of volleyball and the sport’s creator, William G. Morgan (a Springfield College graduate, Class of 1894). There is also a section about the team from the University of Mexico, coached by Professor Rafael Santoyo, which beat the Springfield College Volleyball Club in the final match to take home the International Collegiate Championship of North America. Attended by more than ten thousand spectators, this was the first time these tournaments were held in the east. All games were played at the Springfield College Memorial Field house. “Doc” Walters acted as the official representative of the college, and the officers of the Springfield College Volleyball club were Walt Dobek (President), Wallace Case (Vice-President), and Ted Dreisbach (Secretary-Treasurer). Interestingly enough, Springfield College's Volleyball team was only considered a club at the time, and was not a varsity sport. This didn't stop the "club" from holding multiple championships, including the "National Collegiate Championship, Mid-Western Collegiate Championship, Middle Atlantic Collegiate Championship, Eastern Collegiate Championship, Canadian Championship, and the National Consolation Tournament Championship. The 1952 Massasoit yearbook stated hat "Members of the Volleyball Club play for one reason only. No Varsity letters, no official class cuts, and no school recognition is given to the club members. They play because they love to play volleyball." Marshall "Doc" Walters was also elected Vice President of the National Volleyball Association during his advisorship of the club. Wilbur Peck, a member of the club, was elected to the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1999.</mods:abstract>
