<mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “Place du Sud, Charleroi, Belgium,” shows a large city square lined with buildings in the center of Charleroi, a city located along the Sambre River in Belgium. A gazebo sits in the center of the square and people are walking. During World War I, the Grand Café du Theatre, operated by the Y.M.C.A., was located at Place Du Sud in Charleroi. Specifically geared to soldiers of the Australian Infantry, theatrical performances, such as the opera “Faust,” were given during the war and in the period after when troops were waiting to return to Australia. This slide is part of Springfield College’s collection depicting Australian YMCA war work during World War I.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Text on border reads, "Australian Y.M.C.A. Historical Record Section; Charleroi Place du Sud Aust Y.M.C.A. Club here; In Account With Photographic Commercial Co, 5 Caroline Place."</mods:note>
