<mods:abstract>This lantern slide, “Family Portrait in Tilbury, England,” shows a portrait of a young family. The Australian father stands on the camera’s left while the English mother stands on the camera’s right. Between them is a toddler. They are standing on a boat, and in the distance behind them is a second boat.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>Tilbury is a town in the borough of Thurrock, Essex, England, and sits on the northern bank of the Thames River. This image was likely taken at the Port of Tilbury, currently one of Britain’s three major container ports and which once contained a passenger landing stage served by the railway. The Tilbury Riverside Station was first built as part of the London Tilbury & Southend Railway developments of 1854, with a landing stage facility, so that rail passengers could join the ferry to either Gravesend or passenger liners for more distant shores. Soon the East and West India Docks Company realized that a dock downstream would be more efficient in turn round speed of cargo boats, and they completed construction in 1886. During World War I, the Y.M.C.A. provided soldiers with food and a place to rest. The YMCA also embarked on a massive education program for soldiers, which eventually became the Army Education Corps. This slide is part of Springfield College’s series of lantern slides depicting Australian Y.M.C.A. war work during World War I.</mods:note>
<mods:note>Text on border reads, "Australian Y.M.C.A. Historical Record Section; The family boat from Tilbury Aust. father and English mother;" For a similar lantern slide, see LS-05-06.</mods:note>
