Detail from:
Bay State Smelting Company Kodachrome slides
Bay State Smelting was a brownfield and major air polluter with a long history of OSHA and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) violations. Its site was located in a very low-income neighborhood with commuter rail tracks running along the back boundary. The Urban Self-Help Program (also known as PARC Grants) has helped rehabilitate this site for recreation. Some of the photographs depict the area before rehab (drab landscape, asphalt, fences) and after rehabilitation (children playing soccer in a lush field). More photographs of the playground are available on site.
The collection consists of photographs, articles from journals and newspapers, hazard communication plans, correspondences, notes, documents related to the history of OSHA violations at the Bay State Smelting Company, state orders, environmental reports, ephemera, blood sample analyses, audits, job data reports, pamphlets, various legal documents, and rally flyers.
