<mods:abstract>Artist Jane Brucker related especially to her interests in music and her dedication to teaching. A piano bench became the container for Dr. Rice’s life experiences. The hand-painted stained glass image is directly taken from a photograph of Condoleezza Rice as a girl standing in front of the White House. The piano keys are symbolic of her interest and ability as a musician. Hand-written on the keys are moments in the Civil Rights movement’s timeline, with an emphasis on those events related to Dr. Rice’s Birmingham childhood. Pearls represent Dr. Rice’s femininity and symbolize the irritations she must have faced in her life. Jane used a library card to chronicle Dr. Rice’s life events. A mirror is etched with this quote from Condoleezza Rice about inspiring leadership in others, "Leading in a complex world means recognizing the simple things you can do to make things better."</mods:abstract>
