The chair is made of wood from the rafters of an old fire house built in 1875, Bethune’s birth year. The back of the chair is made to look like an open book from reclaimed wood found by the roadside. The artists felt this related to Bethune’s use of reclaimed and recycled materials when she lacked money to start her schools. It’s a wooden back on the base of a lovely, old office chair. The mosaics for the seat are a timeline of Bethune’s life and her accomplishments.
