<mods:note>Anne Warren Weston gives a detailed report of the anniversary meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Francis Jackson, as chairman, was authorized to appoint a business committee. The appointment of Abby Kelley caused a storm. The viva voce being doubted, the votes were counted and stood about 557 to 451 in Miss Kelley's favor. Lewis Tappan gave four reasons why he could not work on the committee with a woman, and Ellis Gray Loring refuted these reasons. A. A. Phelps declined serving on the committee. Anne describes various speeches--"[David Lee] Child spoke capitally"--and states that "when we broke up it was settled that we had achieved a glorious victory."</mods:note>
