New England’s singular environmental story is that of forest clearance for agriculture through the mid-nineteenth century, followed by forest regrowth as the region industrialized, the population continued to increase, and farm production shifted westward. Regional changes in forest cover were paralleled on Martha’s Vineyard with profound ecological consequences.
