The map shows the location of Chappaquiddick, Wasque, and the Schifter house in 2007 before the Norton Point breach. The graph shows the history of opening and closures of the Norton Point breach over time. Freeman (1807) and other sources indicate that before 1799, Chappaquiddick was a separate island back to the beginning of records. In contrast, since the late nineteenth century, the barrier beach has been closed more often than not. The period preceding the Schifter house construction was the longest known duration for the intact barrier beach.
