Description:
Hurricane damage and forests. As the 1938 hurricane passed the Harvard Forest, the winds picked up in velocity from the east (90 degrees), peaked from the southeast (135), and then declined to the south (180). The orientation of fallen trees indicates that most trees blew down during the first half of the storm’s passing as the wind picked up intensity. Note that a tree oriented to the north corresponds to winds from the south.
