Conserved land composes nearly 25 percent of New England (left) in a distinctive pattern of small to moderate tracts in more settled areas and large blocks of state, federal, and private lands in northern rural areas. The success of New England land trusts in conserving many small private tracts produces a sharp contrast with adjoining New York and Canada. Nonetheless, New England remains far from the goal of an interconnected conservation landscape.
