Josef Lhévinne, born Josef Levine, (1874-1944) was a Russian pianist and piano teacher. He made his concert debut at the age of 14 and moved to Berlin in 1907 to escape anti-Semitism. He moved to New York City in 1919, where he taught at Julliard. His 1924 book, "Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing," is considered a classic.
