Gustav Hinrichs (1850-1942) was a German-born American conductor and composer. He worked in San Francisco at the Fabbri opera as well as the Tivoli House, and he founded the San Francisco Philharmonic Society (a precursor to the San Francisco Symphony). He next worked in NYC at the American Opera Company and later moved to Philadelphia and formed the Gustav Hinrichs Opera Company. He taught at Columbia University (1895-1906) and the National Conservatory. He worked at the Metropolitan Opera House from 1899 to 1904.
On item: Conductor. In U.S. from 1870. In S.F. until 1885, then moved to Phila., where formed own opera co. Gave 1st Am. performance of "Cavalleria" (Phila., 1891), & "Pagliacci" (N.Y. 1893). Cond. at Met, 1893-98. Composed opera, "Onti-Ora" (Indian name of Catskill Mts.).
