Childhood image of Helen Keller produced from an original Carbon Print photograph by commercial and government photographer Charles Milton Bell.His studio at the time was located on Pennsylvania Ave in Washington D.C. and the original photograph was taken there on May 10, 1893. Hand written label in front of portrait indicated that it was donated to the Hopkinton Public Library by A.E. Poulsson, children's author and leading advocate of the Kindergarten Movement. Image is in a gold frame and surrounded by a gold-leaf matt of 14 ½ x 16 ½ inches.Photograph itself is 9x12 inches, an Imperial sized Cabinet Photograph,a black and white image with sepia tones. It is a profile shot, very clear of a girl with fair, almost white skin, with a bare neck and partially bared shoulders. She is adorned with a shawl with a print of leaves or flowers on it. Her reddish wavy hair is pulled back and pinned up. Similar images are held by The Library of Congress.
