Oliver Johnson does not intend to write a history of the abolition movement, but simply his own recollections of the events of the first few years, "with a view to setting in a clear light the leadership of Garrison." He does not expect to cover more than the first ten or twelve years. Taking an apologetic attitude toward this undertaking, Oliver Johnson is disappointed that he could not persuade Garrison to write a series of autobiographical sketches. Oliver Johnson comments: "[Edmund] Quincy ought to write the history. He is a writer of marvelous skill, and he understands both the facts and the philosophy of the movement."
