Augustus Hesse is glad that Debora Weston is home again because "everything goes the wrong way" when she is not there. Augustus Hesse believes that he would have been successful [in obtaining his furlough?] if Debora had taken care of his affairs. "Now I do not know if I shall be able to see Mrs. Weston all my friends & Almira & little Anna---I am Sorrow I do not know hardly what to write. Afflictedness is my pastime now." Hesse describes the long red tape involved in procuring a furlough. Dr. Brown [from the hospital] does not favor Augustus Hesse and takes no interest in the matter. Hesse appealed to Governor Andrew, who wrote to the surgeon in charge of the hospital, "who gave the letter I beleave [sic] to Dr. Brown," who did not like it. Peter has been drafted. Hesse wishes that Peter would join the Massachusetts Battery. Hesse does not believe the war will last long. He has heard a rumor that General Lee has tendered his resignation.
