Augustus Hesse and his unit were mustered into the U.S. army this morning. Hesse reports: "I belong in the 9th Mass. Battery." The town of Weymouth put Hesse out of their quota; Hesse argues that this was wrong. He says: "I was ready to respond to the call for 300,000 men, I was happy that there was giving me a opportunity in Weymouth to put down the Rebellion fighting for Liberty which I so dear love, and to fight against Slavery which I hate." Hesse concludes: "I dit [sic] my duty to fill up the Quota of Weymouth---Will Weymouth do their duty to give me the Bounty they promised me---..."
